Tendons are strong bands of connective tissue, connecting muscles to bones.
Injuries that affect tendons are common in sports or due to overuse.
Tendon injuries include tendinosis (which is similar to a strain, but happens over time), subluxation (when the tendon moves out of place), tendon rupture either through acute or chronic trauma, and tendon laceration due to a sharp injury.
Treatment
Treatment of an injured tendon depends on the injury.
Overuse injuries such as tendinosis may need rest, splint support, and gradual strengthening. Tendon lacerations require surgical repair, followed by extensive hand therapy including splinting to protect the healing tendon, and early movement to minimise stiffness.
