Fractures

A fracture is a broken bone, usually caused by a direct impact, twist or pull.

The bones of the fingers are called "phalanges". There are three phalanges in each finger and two in the thumb.

The bones in the hand are called "metacarpals". The small bones in the wrist (8 in total) are called "carpal bones".

Treatment

Hand therapy after a finger or hand fracture aims to control pain, limit soft tissue swelling, and provide support for the healing fracture using custom-made splints or braces.  Once splinting is no longer needed, therapy aims to restore motion, strength, and function to allow a return to daily activities, work, and sports.
